Ask three installers what a whole-house battery backup costs and you’ll get three very different numbers — not because anyone’s wrong, but because “whole-house backup” hides at least four separate line items. Sorting them out is the difference between a useful budget and sticker shock.

A whole-house battery backup system is a battery, an inverter to convert its power, and the switching that disconnects the home from the grid and routes stored energy to the panel during an outage. Each is priced separately, and the battery itself is rarely the biggest surprise.

Where the money actually goes

It helps to read the cost as a stack rather than one price:

The counterintuitive part is the battery’s share.
